What is a Dutchman?
In traditional woodworking, a dutchman is a small inlay locked across the grain of a board. It’s rarely noticed, almost never mentioned—but without it, a crack would slowly pull the piece apart.
That hidden bit of structure is the heart of Dutchman Co. Quiet decisions that determine how a piece will behave twenty or fifty years from now. Grain direction, joinery choices, the way a rail meets a leg— the details most people only ever feel.
The work is intentionally restrained. Clean lines, warm woods, and proportions that respect the architecture around them, whether that’s an old brick farmhouse or a modern townhouse.
The Work
Meet Maxwell Mangold
I’m Maxwell Mangold — the furniture maker behind Dutchman Co., an Indiana-based studio focused on clean lines, strong joinery, and designs that balance function with art. Each piece is built with intention, using solid hardwoods and a level of detail that is far above your average.
A community of nearly 50,000 people follow the work on YouTube, where I share the builds, the design process, and the day-to-day of running a modern furniture studio. That platform has become a big part of Dutchman Co., giving people a transparent look at how every piece is made.
Whether it’s a custom commission or a new studio design, my goal is simple: create furniture that feels grounded, thoughtful, and built to last.
